The real difference is the refill
Both options give you a battery with a cable. The difference is who keeps it charged. Your own power bank is only useful if you remembered to charge it and pack it. A rental is always charged when it leaves the station.
What owning costs
You pay once, then spend attention: charging it, carrying it, and remembering its cable. Power banks also lose capacity with age and heat, so an older one may hold less than you expect.
What renting costs

When your own power bank wins
If you already own one, keep it charged, and carry it daily, it costs nothing more to use. For long trips away from any station, bring your own.
When a rental wins
On the nights you forgot, or when your own power bank is empty in a drawer. A rental also means one less thing to carry and charge, and nothing to lose.
A practical middle ground
Many people do both: keep a small power bank for everyday use, and rent on the nights they forget it or it runs flat. Since a rental can be returned to any Juiceboxx station, there is nothing to carry home afterwards.
It starts where a station stands
A rental needs a station on your route. Stations are live in Spartanburg and Piedmont, with new venues joining across South Carolina. If your day passes none, your own power bank is the answer.
